Send a Story Around the World – STORY A – Part Four – St Andrew’s School, Argentina,

 

This is the fourth part  of STORY A of our #sendastory project.

You can read the entire story so far on this page. This section was written by the pupils of St Andrew’s School in Olivos, Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

 

St. Andrew’s Scots School is in Olivos, Buenos Aires, Argentina. We are are really big school, with  kindergarten, primary and secondary areas. Olivos is a peaceful suburban town near Buenos Aires city and our school has been here for many years, although not since its foundation, which was 175 years ago. St Andrew’s is one of the oldest schools in Argentina, it was once a boarding school for boys but now it is a day school for both girls and boys, most of them Argentine and Spanish speaking.

 

Confused and terrified, I stood up in the forest in the humid soil. I shook off the dead leaves and moss from my clothes. Feeling a sharp pain in my temples, I blinked hard to try to adjust my eyes to the darkness and looked around me.

Suddenly, a match lit an old-fashioned lamp. A strange old man was holding the lamp and watching me closely. My head wasn’t playing games: it was the man from the shack.

‘What is happening to me? What are you doing to me? Who are you?’ I quivered.

‘I won’t hurt you, but the less you know about me, the better for you,’ he answered, breathing heavily. His voice was raspy and deep. ‘We haven’t got much time. Everything is falling apart.’ He handed the photo of the girl to me.

‘Who’s the girl?’

‘She is the one you must help. You must find her and save her,’ the old man insisted. There was a note of panic in his voice.

‘How?’

The old man took out a battered roll of what seemed leather, tied with a red ribbon round its middle. He unrolled it carefully on the ground and I saw it was a map.

Jump! Into Politics – UK Students Fight for their Friend Yashika

 

There are many ways to get young people involved in politics. Now, more than ever before, the voices of the world’s youth can be heard. Many young campaign groups use Social Media to organise protests, or to raise awareness of issues that concern them.

Pupils of an English school are using Twitter and Facebook to share their petition to prevent the deportation of one of their classmates, who may be sent back to her home country of Mauritius without her family.

Local Conservative Member of Parliament David Burrowes tweeted at Oasis Sixth Form’s Twitter account: “am doing all I can to #FightForYashika and support her. Have made contact with Home Office to try and urgently stop deportation”.

Jump! Mag spoke to Yashika’s friend and classmate, Shantelle Creed to find out more.

 

 

Yashika Bageerathi, an inspirational student who attends Oasis Academy Hadley, came to the UK with her family in 2011 in order to escape abuse and danger from her home country of Mauritius. She is currently being held at a detention centre while her case is reviewed by Britain’s immigration authorities.

   

As Yashika has turned 18, her case has been separated from her family, and she faces being sent from the UK back to Mauritius, without her family. She will be sent back with no money and no where to live.

   

YashikaSince attending Oasis Academy,  Yashika has become known for her selfless acts across the academy, but her role as social ambassador extends far greater. Yashika is someone which could be continuously relied on, her passion and love for maths has seen her become a second maths teacher to many student in the academy. Her ability to continuously give up her time to help others with work, charity events and problems is something I personally can only dream of being able to do.

   

Losing Yashika would mean losing a role model and a future success. The decision would appear to be illogical, as Yashika has  studied immensely hard in order to achieve great results to attend her desired universities – for all that to be taken away is simply immoral.

   

This decision has caused wide spread outrage, with friends, students, family and teachers all expressing their frustration at situation. We are appealing for more support, there is an online petition for those over 18 years. We also advise people to follow the official @saveYashika account as well as tweeting #FightForYashika and #SaveYashika. Help us achieve justice. Thank you.

Send a Story Around the World – STORY B – Part Two – Harrow School, Hong Kong

 

This is the second part of STORY B of our #sendastory project. You can read the entire story so far on this page. This chapter was written by the pupils of Harrow School, Hong Kong.

 

Harrow International School Hong Kong

Harrow International School Hong Kong is the first international boarding and day school in Hong Kong. Set into the hills, it has tremendous views across the marina, and shopping promenade of the Gold Coast and, beyond, to the harbour and Lantau Island in the distance.

 

 

 

 

Nowhere.  This was strange – he was sure he had heard the sound of the dart hitting the board.  In confusion, Marc searched for the lost dart, scrabbling on his hands and knees.  His aunt was in the doorway, her piercing amber eyes sent a shiver up Marc’s spine.  He turned around; he was surrounded by darkness.  There were no walls, no ceiling, no floor…nothing.  All was gone except Marc, the map and his aunt.

 Turning back to his aunt, Marc swore he saw traces of a smile. 

 Then it all happened too quickly; a pale, cold hand, with long black fingernails tore through the map. The elongated fingers wrapped themselves around his neck, choking him.  He was pulled into the map.  Marc shut his eyes fiercely and screamed in terror.  He was falling…falling…falling…

 He landed.  Where was he?  This wasn’t quite the adventure he’d had in mind.

 It was ice cold, as cold as the hand that had choked him.  Trembling, Marc sat up, opening his eyes.  The barren wasteland stretched before him.  A harsh wind cackled as it blew wildly, whipping across the landscape.

 As his senses awakened, he turned around.  An abandoned station hunched against the cruel wind; a dim green light pierced through its rusting metal frame.  To the left of the station, was a sign: ‘Welcome to Ellesmere Island’. 

 Swift dark figures danced just beyond his vision and Marc thought he saw a pale, translucent face in the window.

Ascot International School

Ascot International School is situated in the suburbs of Bangkok. It is a British style school offering the British curriculum to children aged between 2 and 18. Our motto is respect, communicate and collaborate. So we are delighted to be part of this amazing project.

 

 

 

 

Suddenly I woke up on the cold, bloody floor. I tilted my head to the left and right but it occurred to me that the hut was gone; instead I seemed to be lying on a forest ground. It was wet and muddy with patches of red splattered blood.

I stood up, slowly adjusting to the environment around me, seeing only the wilderness, the temperature was below zero, the frozen breeze upon my aching back. I felt a chill in my spine. There was nothing to see except trees. I looked around to get my bearings and I began walking into darkness.

I felt peculiar, like someone was following me. I turned around and noticed something moving. It was a man, a rusty, old man. His face made me think of my dead grandfather but I didn’t feel very safe. I attempted to run but to where?

I stumbled and fell, a shocking pain splintered throughout my bones. It was black Pitch black. My heart sank to my legs, I felt physically exhausted. My mind running through the events. I sat in the forest , endless trees stretched out before me.

Send a Story Around the World – STORY B – Part One – Del Van Gorder School, Canada

As you know, to celebrate World Book Day 2014, Jump! Mag is sending a story around the world. In fact, we are sending TWO stories around the world. This is STORY B, which starts in Yukon, Canada.

We will publish the entire stories on a special page on the site, so you can read it in one place. Read STORY A here and STORY B here.

 

UK teacher Grainne Hallahan  set a task for 14 schools around the world – to write 200 words of a story then pass it on to the next school, in a different country, on a different continent.  We will publish a part of the story every week on Jump! Mag.

 Along with their story, we are asking the pupils to share information and photos of their school, their town and their country, which we will post on Instagram and Pinterest. What is it like to grow up in Ghana? Do you really see bears in Canadian cities? Do all kids go surfing in Australia? If you have a question to ask the pupils, please share in the comments or ask on Twitter or Facebook and we will pass on to the school.

We start STORY B in Yukon, Canada with the pupils of Del Van Gorder School

 

 

 

Del Van Gorder is a K-12 school, located in the isolated northern Canadian village of Faro, Yukon. Faro is a town of 400 and the school has 52 students aged 4-18. We are surrounded by stunning mountains, frozen lakes and rivers, and lots of snow for most of the year. At least once a year we are the coldest populated town on the planet.

 

 

Marc Dixon was 18 and not sure what to do with his life. A semester at Montreal’s Champlain Regional College had left him undecided. He’d taken off the winter term, looking for a job or an adventure – whichever came first.

Happily Marc’s folks had surprised him with an Air Canada ticket to go see his aunt who lived in the Yukon, in Canada’s far north. It had been on Marc’s “sand” bucket list since Tante Monique had gone north to work for ReCLAIM Domain, a company that restored defunct mine sites to natural habitat. Marc was definitely for the environment. Wolves, caribou and wolverines needed homes too.

Marc’s aunt had married Doug, a local equipment operator in Faro, who was part of the Kaska First Nations band. His people had lived in this harsh environment for over 20 millennium. Doug’s last name was Shorty, but he was over 6ft – a tall Shorty. Marc’s aunt was 5ft, so she was now a ‘short’ Shorty.

Marc’s adventure started when he landed in Whitehorse in time for Rendezvous. He grinned when he met trappers, mushers and can-can girls as they walked along the quaint, rustic main street. He’d watched men and women pack over 100 kilos of flour packs in a contest that re-enacted the famous Chilkoot trek of the1898 gold rush era.

A month had flown by in no time filled with snowmobiling and ice-fishing and exploring trails around Faro. A major thrill had happened when Marc’s aunt and seven colleagues had won $25 million in a Lotto Max draw. Monique had decided to help Marc continue his “sand” bucket list by giving him an Air Canada ticket as a gift.

He could go anywhere they flew. How was he to decide? The Sphinx? The Eiffel Tower? Machu Picchu? Marc took the dart his aunt gave him, closed his eyes and threw it. “Thwack”! Marc’s eyes snapped to the map. He’d be heading to …
